This year Mothering Sunday is on Sunday 19th March. Always on a Sunday and usually in March. This celebration of Mothers takes place on the fourth Sunday of Lent.
As far back as the Middle ages Mothering Sunday has been celebrated. It started as religious celebration to honor mother churches. People would visit the church where they were baptized. As this was a rare day off children working in service would visit their mothers. On the way they would pick wild flowers as a gift. This is how the tradition of giving flowers started. In recent times it has become more commercialised.
Children usually give their mother a gift of flowers or a card. Some Mothers are treat to breakfast in bed and generally made to feel special.
