The 1514 memorial is situated in the town of Hawick in the Scottish Borders.
The memorial which is often referred to as just 'the horse' was unveiled in 1914. The statue commemorates a victory by local youths over English raiders at nearby Hornshole, The English flag was captured and carried back to Hawick and is shown on the statue.
William Beattie was a promising Scottish sculptor killed in the closing weeks of the First World War. His most famous work is the 1514 Memorial in Hawick.
