The Dark Hedges are beech trees, that were planted around 1775 on both sides of a long avenue near to Gracehill House. The effect they create is of a tunnel, of imposing trees that interwine and entangle which creates an impressive mix of light and shadows.
The Dark Hedges are found in County Antrim in Northern Ireland between the villages of Armoy and Stranocum, around a 10-minute drive from Ballymoney.
Popular myths to where the Dark hedges get there name from include that of the ghost known as the Grey lady, who haunts the trees. She flits from one tree to another before disapearing at the last beech tree. The more realistic is that the huge trees block most of the light, which results in a dark tunnel that looks like a hedge.
