dramatic setting on the peninsula above the River Wear is at the heart of the World Heritage Site along with Durham Castle. The central tower is 66 metres tall.
Durham Cathedral, founded in AD 1093, is one of the oldest and most famous churches in England. The cathedral is the seat of the Bishop of Durham. It contains the shrines of the Anglo-Saxon saints Cuthbert and Bede.
Behind the cathedral stands the castle, an ancient Norman fortress which was the residence of the prince-bishops of Durham.
The Cathedral is by far Durham’s most popular tourist attraction, followed by Durham Castle, and has even been featured in the Harry Potter films as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
