Durham Cathedral was built in the Romanesque style in the late 11th and early 12th centuries. Built to house the relics of St Cuthbert and the Venerable Bede. It is witness to the importance of the early Benedictine monastic community and is the largest and finest example of Norman architecture in England.
The Cathedral and Castle are located on a peninsula formed by a bend in the River Wear and are at the heart of the city centre of Durham.
Durham Cathedral featured in the first two Harry Potter films, The Philosopher's Stone and Chamber of Secrets as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
