About St Mary's Lighthouse

This local coastal landmark lighthouse stands on the tiny St Mary’s Island which is just north of Whitley Bay in North Tyneside on the North East of England coastline.

Cross over to the small rocky island via a short causeway which is submerged during high tide. Remains of a shipwreck from 1913 can be seen at low tide.

There has been a light on St Mary’s since medieval times when many ships were wrecked near the island. Work began in 1986 to build a new lighthouse.
