The Forth Bridge was the first major structure in Britain to be constructed of steel instead of iron. This was possible because of an advance in steel manufacture.
The steel-built cantilever bridge is 2.5 kilometres long and has a double railway track which is 46 metres above the Forth at high tide.
The three cantilever structures are just over 100 metres in height, and each tower rests on a massive granite pier.
