Forth Rail Bridge
The Forth Bridge
was the first major structure in Britain to be constructed of steel instead of iron. This was possible because of an advance in steel manufacture.
The steel-built cantilever bridge is 2.5 kilometres long and has a double railway track which is 46 metres above the Forth at high tide.
The three cantilever structures are just over 100 metres in height, and each tower rests on a massive granite pier.
