Fountains Abbey
Fountains Abbey is one of the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monasteries in England. Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal Park was one of the first places to be designated a NESCO World Heritage site in the UK in 1986.
Situated near the River Skell in Ripon, in North Yorkshire it was founded by thirteen Benedictine monks in 1132. Named after the many springs of water that existed in the area.
The estate was sold by the Crown to a merchant, Sir Richard Gresham. It remained in private hands until the 1960s. The National Trust bought the estate from the West Riding County Council in 1983.
