The blackhouses were long narrow dwellings that were home to both humans and animals. They had no chimneys and small windows. The smoke from the continuous peat fire escaped from the porous roof. The straw slowly blackened and the smoke killed the bugs living in the roof. .
The blackhouses got their name after they were compared to the newer homes being built in the 1800's and not from the blackened roofs full of soot.
