The design and construction of the blackhouses dates back thousands of years. Traditionally humans and cattle shared the same thatched dwelling. The blackhouses on the Isle of Lewis were modified to withstand the tough environment of the Outer Hebrides. They had low rounded roofs which were roped for security from the strong Atlantic winds. Thick walls provided insulation.
