George Square was named after King George III when it was completed in the late 1700's.
Grand residential houses were built between 1784 and 1820 in the square. Only one of these impressive buildings remains nowadays, the Millennium Hotel, which is next to the train station.
George Square is dominated by the landmark City Chambers. In the 19th century statues representing the Glaswegian, Scottish and British culture were erected. There are twelve statues in the square.
