Hadrian’s Wall
goes from coast to coast and spans three counties in the North of England, It stretches from Wallsend on the River Tyne to Bowness on Solway on the west coast. The Roman wall is 73 miles long, with the longest stretch being in Northumberland.
About 2,000 years ago, the Roman Empire stretched from the Middle East all the way across to Western Europe. Hadrian was the Emperor of Rome from AD 117 until AD 138. He lived his life in Rome, with his Spanish family. He spent the majority of his reign traveling across his Empire aiming to improve it, particularly its borders. He built Hadrian's Wall to secure the Empire's north-western border in the province of Britannia.
The National Trail follows the line of the Hadrian’s Wall UNESCO
World Heritage Site, passing through the beautiful and rugged landscape of the North.
