Gearrannan Black Houses on the Isle of Lewis China Cup is from an original painting by local North East artist Emily Ward.
Emily has painted this traditional old dwelling with its thatched roof amongst the bright colours of the Scottish heather. The splashes of pink, gentle blues and lilacs show off this tranquil setting in the Outer Hebrides.

The highlands and islands of Scotland were dotted with dwellings referred to as blackhouses hundreds of years ago. They were long narrow buildings usually built parallel with each other.
They had dry stone walls and a thatched roof which was always blackened with the soot from the peat fire in the kitchen. They had no chimneys and small windows which caused the smoke from the fire to accumulate inside, escaping through the porous roof and hence blackening the roof.
