Jacob's Ladder, Sidmouth, postcard is by North East artist Emily Ward from her art portfolio of the South West.
Emily has captured the charm of the iconic wooden stairway on this art postcard. Emily’s white steps contrast with the darker red tones of the cliffs leading up to the clock tower and gardens. The soft hue from the evening sun refelcts over the deep reds and purples of the cliffs.
The gentle tones of lilac and pink shimmer over the tranquil sea that is merging into the horizon. The foreground is filled with lush wildflowers and grasses in yellows, greens and purples adding a splash of colour to Jacob’s Ladder.

Sidmouth, a popular seaside resort on East Devon Heritage Coast is home to the Grade II listed Jacob’s Ladder. Originally built over 150 years ago these historic wooden steps are located on the western end of the beach. They lead from the beach up to Connaught Gardens with views of the dramatic red cliffs of the Jurassic coastline.
The steps were given their name in the Victorian era as they were said to represent the biblical Jacobs’ ladder to heaven. There is about 100 steps over three wooden platforms.
