Lincoln Cathedral in the Midlands is the fourth largest cathedral in the UK dating back to 1072. The cathedral was mostly built from Lincolnshire Limestone and was quarried locally before the 18th century.
The Gothic style cathedral is home to the famous Lincoln Imp. Located high up in the Cathedral’s Angel Choir, this medieval stone ‘grotesque’ is 30 cm high. The imp has become an emblem of Lincoln.
Legend has it the devil sent the imps to the cathedral to cause mischief and trouble. They broke tables, threw stones at the angels and tripped up the bishop. The smallest angel turned the imp to stone when he threatened to pluck out the angel’s feathers.
