Penrith Beacon
is a historic landmark high above the town of Penrith in Cumbria. The beacon is 286m above sea level and can be seen for miles around. It's a lovely vantage point that looks out over the Eden Valley towards the Lakeland hills. The path to the beacon begins on Beacon Edge on the outskirts of Penrith.
Penrith Beacon was built in 1719 and was lit to warn local communities and their livestock of danger and impending attack.
There has been a beacon on the summit of Beacon Hill since 1296 and was part of a chain of beacons that ran along the Eden Valley. The beacon was recorded as flashing during the Napoleonic Wars in 1804 and the last time it was lit was during the Jacobite Rebellion in 1745.
