Puffin
The Puffin
is sometimes nicknamed both the "clown of the sea" and a "sea parrot". Atlantic puffins have a large parrot style beak and white and black feathers. Puffins are small seabirds and measure around 25cm in length.
Puffins return to the Farne Islands every year to breed, usually between April and late July. They only return to land for a short period to breed. Whilst they are out at sea they shed their brightly coloured bills, for a dull grey coloured bill. When the spring approaches so does their vibrant colours and orange bill.
