Richmond Castle
Richmond Castle
in North Yorkshire, stands proudly overlooking the River Swale. It is near the town centre of Richmond and offers stunning views of the Yorkshire Dales.
Originally called Riche Mount, it means the strong hill. It was constructed following the Norman Conquest of England and the Domesday Book of 1086 refers to a Castlery at Richmond.
The castle was constructed by Alan Rufus in 1071 and is the best preserved early Norman Castle in England.
