Richmond Castle is perched high above the River Swale in North Yorkshire and has a history spanning nearly 1000 years. It is one of the last and best preserved Norman fortresses in the UK and is a popular tourist attraction.
The castle was used as a prison for conscientious objectors during World War 1. Prisoners recorded both their political and personal beliefs in the form of graffiti. During World War 2 more graffiti was added when the cells were used as a punishment block for soldiers. The graffiti is still visible in the castle cells.
