St Mary’s Lighthouse Whitley Bay framed ceramic tile is a gorgeous painting by local North East artist Emily Ward. The local coastal lighthouse can be seen standing proudly on St Mary’s Island, amongst the crashing waves.
Deep blue shades are used in the sea, compared to the light sky with white fluffy clouds, signifying a bright sunny day. Emily’s classic white paint splatters represent the sea spray caused by the powerful waves, shown in the painting. You can also see the former keepers’ house next to the lighthouse, on St Mary’s Island.
About St Mary’s Lighthouse
Decommissioned in 1984, St Mary’s Lighthouse is now a grade II listed building. It is located on St Mary’s Island , originally called Bates Island. The lighthouse is open to visitors today, who can climb the 137 steps up to the lantern room or see the Visitors’ Centre.
The island and lighthouse are connected to the coast at low tide by a rocky causeway, which becomes inaccessible at certain points in the day.

Ceramic Framed Tile
Each Framed Tile is hand finished by North East Artist Emily Ward. So although your ceramic framed tile is actually a print, no two tiles are identical. Emily hand finishes the tiles by adding extra paint to the ceramic tile.
The framed tile appears as if it is floating inside the frame.
Frames are available in White and Black Frames.
Each frame is 27 x 27 x 5cm
Colours may vary as each tile is printed individually.
