The Bowes Museum
is just 13 miles from Scotch Corner in the historic market town of Barnard Castle. The idea for the impressive art gallery was created by the philanthropists Joséphine and John Bowes. The french styled public museum is set in beautiful landscaped gardens and was opened in 1892.
