The Bowes Museum is a hidden treasure, the magnificent building stands proud in the historic market town of Barnard Castle in County Durham.
In 1847 John Bowe, a successful businessman with an interest in the arts travelled to Paris. He bought a theatre and met his future wife, a Parisian actress called Joséphine Coffin-Chevallier. She was a talented amateur painter who was interested in a whole range of art forms including paintings, ceramics, furniture and textiles.
Together the couple began to develop the idea of creating a world-class museum in John’s ancestral home of Teesdale in the North East. Their wish was to introduce the wider world of art to the local people. It was designed with the collaboration of two architects, one from France and one from Newcastle.
Open edition prints are signed and titled by the artist.
