The ancient Major Oak grows in Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire and is one of the biggest oak trees in Britain. The canopy spreads over 28 meters and the trunk has a circumference of 11 Meters. It has an estimated weight of 23 tonnes. It is unknown if the Major Oak is one tree or many saplings that have fused together over the years.
The iconic tree is over 1000 years old and is at the heart of folklore stories of Sherwood Forrest’s Robin Hood and his band of merry men. It is said they use to meet and hide out under the old oak tree. They defended the rights of the poor and evaded the law.
