Shambles is one of York's most famous landmarks and one of the best-preserved medieval shopping streets in Europe. It is a narrow cobbled street with overhanging buildings that was home to about 25 butchers shops.
It was narrow in design to keep the direct sunlight off the meat. Although no longer home to the many butchers shops some of the vibrant retail stores still have a meat hook outside.
It is believed that The shambles was the inspiration for Diagon Alley in the Harry Potter movie adaptations.
