The castle at Totnes, has a rich and varied history dating back to 907 when the first castle was built.
The castle is one of the best and earliest surviving examples of a Norman Motte and bailey castle. The term ‘motte and bailey’ is symbolic of the Norman Invasion as both words ‘motte’ and ‘bailey’ derive from Old French; ‘motte’ meaning ‘turfy’ and ‘bailey’ or ‘baille’ meaning low yard
