Tower of Refuge
The Tower of Refuge
guards St Mary's Isle in Douglas Bay on the Isle of Man. William Hillary the founder of the RNLI petitioned for a sanctuary to be built on there.
The stone tower was constructed in 1832 by the RNLI to provide a visible warning for ships. Built on a partially submerged reef, the tower also provided shelter to unfortunate shipwreck victims until help arrived. There was a a bell to summon help along with space to store provisions such as bread and water for those in distress.
