Whitby Abbey original painting by North East artist Emily Ward is a new commission from her Yorkshire and Humberside range of art prints and gifts.
Emily's painting of these impressive Gothic ruins standing proud on a clifftop, overlooking the town of Whitby has an air of mystery about it. The striking purples and blues of the evening sky shimmer over the abbey.
Pretty pink flowers grow wildly in front of the abbey giving a softer feel to these ancient ruins.

Whitby Abbey guards from the top of the East Cliff over the town of Whitby in North Yorkshire.
Whitby Abbey was founded as a monastery in 657AD and then became a Benedictine abbey. Henry VIII confiscated the abbey in 1539, under the dissolution of the Monasteries.
Whitby Abbey has influenced many artists and writers , including Bram Stoker in 1890 who set part of Dracula at the abbey and Caedmon, the first named poet in the English language
